TRON Lightcycle / Run
In 1982, Disney made filmmaking history with “Tron.” It was the first production of its kind to mix live action with computer-generated visuals and backlit animation.
The iconic film went on to inspire video games, comic books, an animated series. Eventually there are the 2010 sequel “Tron: Legacy.” Now it is also a new Disney theme park attraction.
“Lean forward into the ultimate race of survival!” the Disney website proclaims. “Leave the real world behind and join Team Blue in a quest across the Grid—the dark, computerized world with no horizons from TRON.”
The hyperbole continues, “Climb aboard your very own Lightcycle and take off on a high-speed adventure, racing against the Grid’s most menacing Programs. Surge past your fierce opponents as you attempt to cross through 8 Energy Gates and secure your team’s victory—so you can survive to race another day.”
A prototype version of the ride is in the Disney theme park in China. Of it, BlogMickey writes that TRON “is one of the most popular attractions at Shanghai Disneyland. It is a roller coaster with an approximate runtime of one minute and five seconds. The coaster features a unique ‘flying’ ride system that puts riders in a forward leaning position on their stomach and chest.”
In addition to the unique forward-leaning position for riders, TRON Lightcycle / Run will also be one of the fastest coasters at any Disney theme park.
This is a good thing. Magic Kingdom Park might need a fast and Team Blue getaway, what with Florida’s menacing political overlords and all.
TRON Lightcycle / Run opens in Tomorrowland at Magic Kingdom Park, Apr. 4, 2023.
