Chicago Symphony Orchestra

The Triumph of the Octagon

[Chicago, IL] Commissioning and championing new music have always been essential to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra’s mission.

The CSO continues that proud tradition during the 2023-24 season with four commissioned works by American composers that will receive their world premieres.

We are most excited by the debut of “The Triumph of the Octagon” by minimalist pioneer Philip Glass.

Glass has had a lifelong fascination with mathematics and patterns. He drew inspiration for this work from the octagon shapes found in the design of Castel del Monte, a 13th-century citadel in the Murgia region of southeast Italy.

Rounding out the bel paese program, Chicago Symphony Orchestra Music Director Riccardo Muti will also conduct Richard Strauss’ “Aus Italien” and Mendelssohn’s “Italian Symphony.”

Chicago Symphony Orchestra performs the world premiere of Philip Glass’ “The Triumph of the Octagon,” Sep. 28 – 30, 2023.
