Chotto Matte

Japanese-Peruvian cuisine with outstanding views

SAN FRANCISCO: Retail was limping along before the pandemic hit. Now urban developers are looking to adapt existing for brick-and-mortar retail into mixed-use developments.

Union Square stands to benefit from this trend. The former Macy’s building is being redeveloped for retail and office use. It will be topped off by the newest location for the renowned Soho restaurant, Chotto Matte. The vibrant restaurant is acclaimed for its Nikkei (Japanese/Peruvian) cuisine and lively atmosphere.

San Francisco Business Times proclaimed, “The deal for the new restaurant addresses two areas of glaring need for Union Square to reclaim its pre-pandemic vibrancy.”

The 16,500 square foot restaurant will be located on the rooftop of the former Macy’s department store in Union Square. Offering one of the few open-air rooftop dining terraces in the city, with views across Union Square, the Bay Bridges and Twin Peaks, Chotto Matte San Francisco will open in late 2022.
