Matthew Wong

The Realm of Appearances

Matthew Wong: The Realm of Appearances is the first museum retrospective devoted to the late painter Matthew Wong.

A self-taught artist, Wong achieved resounding critical acclaim during his short artistic career. It was a career that spanned just six years, beginning in 2013 when he began painting and drawing in earnest.

Melancholic and mosaic, his art was heralded as a worthy successor of Vincent van Gogh.

And, like van Gogh, Matthew Wong lived with depression throughout his adult life. He died by suicide in 2019 at age 35.

Matthew Wong: The Realm of Appearances is on view from Oct. 16, 2022, through Feb. 5, 2023, at the Dallas Museum of Art. The DMA is the only museum that collected the artist’s work during his lifetime.

24HourNation appreciates the fact that opening hours for the Dallas Museum of Art include one night each week. On Fridays the museum stays open until 9 p.m.
