Southern/Modern
[Athens, GA] “Southern/Modern” will be the first exhibition to survey comprehensively the rich array of paintings and works on paper created in the American South during the first half of the 20th century.
Featuring more than 100 paintings and works on paper created between 1913 and 1955, the exhibition is structured around themes including current events and social issues, urbanization, religion, the environment, artists’ colonies and how these creators interpreted the latest trends in modern art.
Artists in the exhibition include Romare Bearden, John Biggers, Dusti Bonge, Carroll Cloar, Marie Hull, Jacob Lawrence, Blanche Lazzell, John McCrady, Will Henry Stevens and Hale Woodruff.
Telling an important story that has been largely absent from American art history, “Southern/Modern” is on view at the Georgia Museum of Art Jun 17 – Dec 10, 2023.
In addition to its daytime hours, the Georgia Museum of Art is open until 9 p.m. on Thursdays. This is ideal for those who are unable (or unwilling) to visit museums by day.
#EveryMuseum in America could be open late at least once a month. Few are. The Georgia Museum of Art does. Support the Georgia Museum of Art.
