Welcome to Matteson!
[Chicago, IL] The National New Play Network (NNPN) is an alliance of U.S. professional theatres that collaborate in innovative ways to develop, produce, and extend the life of new plays.
One of the NNPN’s innovations is its Rolling World Premiere program in which a new play is premiered by multiple theatre companies over an 18-month period. The program allows the playwright to collaborate and make adjustments while working with unique perspectives from each company.
One of this year’s rolling world premieres is “Welcome to Matteson!” by Inda Craig-Galván.
In this four-person play, a suburban couple hosts a welcome-to-the-neighborhood dinner party for their new neighbors — a couple recently (and forcibly) relocated from Cabrini Green, Chicago’s roughest housing project. The dinner party is anything but welcoming.
“Welcome to Matteson!” is a dark comedy about reverse gentrification and how we deal with the “other” when the other looks just like us.
As part of a NNPN Rolling World Premiere, Congo Square Theatre will stage “Welcome to Matteson!” Sep. 6 – Oct. 1, 2023.
