BAM Next Wave

BAM Next Wave

[Brooklyn, NY] Next Wave is the Brooklyn Academy of Music’s (BAM) forward-thinking performance art festival. Returning to BAM for the first time in three years, this year’s creative odyssey includes:

“Broken Chord” – Combining dance, song, and storytelling, this tells the story of a South African–based chorus whose tour through North America and England in the late 19th century was marred by the realities of racism.

FOOD – Performer and theater artist Geoff Sobelle gathers the audience around a gargantuan banquet table for a culinary experience that uses smell, taste, touch, and audience instruction to feed a meditation on the ways and whys of eating.

“The Köln Concert” – American dancer and choreographer Trajal Harrell along with the Schauspielhaus Zürich Dance Ensemble perform a piece set to the music of Keith Jarrett and Joni Mitchell.

“Angel Island” – Composer Huang Ruo, director Matthew Ozawa, and filmmaker Bill Morrison have crafted an opera that serves as a visceral and clear-eyed opera tribute to the Chinese immigrants who passed through and perished at Angel Island.

BAM Next Wave 2023 begins across the academy’s three locations on Oct. 19, 2023, and continues through Jan. 13, 2024.
