Here We Are

Here We Are

[New York City, NY] The theatre community began buzzing as The Shed announced the cast and dates for the highly anticipated final musical by legendary composer Stephen Sondheim.

“Here We Are” is based on two Luis Buuel movies, “The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie” and “The Exterminating Angel.” In addition to Sondheim’s music and lyrics “Here We Are” has a book by Tony Award-nominee David Ives and will be directed by two-time Tony winner, Joe Mantello. Tony Award-nominee Sam Pinkleton serves as choreographer.

The all-star cast will feature Francois Battiste, Tracie Bennett, Bobby Cannavale, Micaela Diamond, Amber Gray, Jin Ha, Rachel Bay Jones, Denis O’Hare, Steven Pasquale, David Hyde Pierce, and Jeremy Shamos.

Goodness!

Days before dying, Sondheim gave some insights about the musical to The New York Times.

“The first act is based on ‘The Discreet Charm of the Bourgeoisie,’ and the second act is based on ‘The Exterminating Angel’ … I don’t know if I should give the so-called plot away, but the first act is a group of people trying to find a place to have dinner, and they run into all kinds of strange and surreal things, and in the second act, they find a place to have dinner, but they can’t get out.”

Classic Sondheim.

The Shed presents the world premiere of “Here We Are.” Previews begin Sep. 28, 2023, prior to an official opening Oct. 22, 2023.
