Ireland goes all in on the nighttime economy

News reports are catching our attention on the work of Catherine Martin, Ireland’s Minister for Tourism, Culture and the Arts.

She has launched a late-night museum pilot program called “After Hours.” It aims to support small museums and galleries across the country to open later, program new live events and encourage diversity of offering in small towns and villages across the country.

Ms. Martin has also advocated for nighttime economy advisors. Full-time positions to boost nightlife are in the process of being filled in nine towns and cities around Ireland: Cork, Dublin, Kilkenny, Drogheda, Limerick, Galway, Longford, Buncrana, and Sligo.

Despite recent news reports based on biased studies of drinking, Ireland is also looking at extending operating hours for alcohol-licensed businesses. (Plus, Ireland is set to become the first country in the world to introduce health warning labels on alcohol products.)

Ireland seems to grasp the cultural and economic potential of its nights while also taking care of its residents.
