Re-Orienting the Nighttime Economy

In Hong Kong, bars, pubs and clubs have been forced to shut down several times during the pandemic. About four hundred spots have closed for good. Roughly 17,000 establishments are still in operation.

Simply put, Hongkongers have quickly grown accustomed to eating dinner earlier and cooking at home. Residents are not going out or staying out as late as they used to.

In response, on Nov. 3, 2022, Hong Kong’s government began allowing eateries and drinking spots to once again set their own hours.

The president of the Hong Kong Federation of Restaurants and Related Trades predicts this change will improve business by at least 20 percent for about 1,000 eateries that stayed open late or overnight.

Still, industry leaders are urging the government to do more.
