[Santa Fe, NM] It is the story of a musician and poet who travels to the underworld to bring back his beloved wife Euridice, who has died from a snakebite.

No, not the Broadway musical “Hadestown.” That is a more recent treatment of the ancient tale of mythology.

This is the opera “Orfeo.”

Legendary lovers, Orfeo and Euridice, face death and separation. They undertake a perilous journey from the underworld back to the world of the living.

One rule must be followed: Orfeo cannot look at Euridice.

Uh, oh…

One of earliest operas in the Western classical music tradition, Claudio Monteverdi’s “L’Orfeo” is rebranded as “Orfeo” in Santa Fe, New Mexico. With a world premiere orchestration by Nico Muhly, Santa Fe Opera presents “Orfeo,” Jul 29 – Aug 24, 2023.
