Back to the Future: The Musical

Back to the Future: The Musical

[New York City, NY] Marty McFly, a high school student, is accidentally sent 30 years into the past in a time-traveling DeLorean invented by his friend, the eccentric scientist Dr. Emmett Brown.

In doing so, McFly changes the course of history. Now he is in a race against time to fix the present, escape the past and send himself … back to the future.

You remember the movie “Back to the Future.” It helped make stars out of Michael J. Fox and Christopher Lloyd.

Don’t laugh. Now, it’s a stage musical. It is not only a musical, the show received positive reviews during its opening run in London’s West End. It then won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical in 2022. And, the production is already getting that Broadway buzz that tells you it will be around for a while.

The New York Times reports “‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ features a book by Bob Gale, the screenwriter who co-wrote and co-produced all three films, and songs by Alan Silvestri, who composed the film’s score, as well as Glen Ballard, a record producer and songwriter. The musical also includes pop songs featured in the film.”

Theater Mania adds, “The multi-award winning ‘Back to the Future: The Musical’ is set to change Broadway musical theatre history.”

Roger Bart (Doc Brown) and 2022 Olivier Award nominee Hugh Coles (George McFly) from the original London cast are set to repeat their roles in New York. Joining them as Marty McFly will be 2019 Jimmy Awards finalist Casey Likes.

And, if we are lucky, at the end of the musical, when the DeLorean blasts off into the future, it will fly out over the audience and into the pantheon of musical theatre experiences.

Great Scott! “Back to the Future: The Musical” brings its power of love to Broadway, Jun. 30, 2023.
