Choir Boy
Playwright Tarell Alvin McCraney, who co-wrote the Oscar-winning screenplay for the film “Moonlight,” made his Broadway debut in 2019 with a take on the prep school experience.
Following the world premiere of “Choir Boy,” NPR reported that the play, “focuses on Pharus Young, the leader of the school choir. He is a talented scholarship student, and the target of vicious anti-gay bullying by another boy, Bobby, the nephew of the headmaster.
“It’s a coming-of-age drama deeply infused with African-American culture, including hymn singing and step dancing.”
Can a rigid institution that prides itself on producing “strong, ethical Black men” contain Pharus, who is a quiet rebel at his core?
Or can Pharus inspire the very nature of the school to shift forever?
Identity and community clash in this Tony-nominated hit. “Choir Boy” runs Apr. 15 — May 14, 2023, at Portland Center Stage at The Armory in Portland, OR.
