The Sound Inside
Sometimes we encounter people, even perfect strangers, who begin to interest us at first sight, all at once, before a word is spoken.
This thought is at the center of “The Sound Inside,” a play by Adam Rapp.
In the small-scale mystery, novelist Bella Baird has almost completely isolated herself from the world. But things change when she meets Christopher – a brilliant but enigmatic student in her creative writing class at Yale. As their friendship deepens, their lives and the stories they tell about themselves become intertwined in unpredictable ways, leading to a shocking request.
Of its New York City premiere in 2019, The New York Times wrote, “‘The Sound Inside’ interests us at first, bleak sight. It keeps our interest not only on its narrowest terms, as a play about writing, but in its larger implications. What we know about other people, what we know about ourselves, are stories that won’t stay still. As we write our lives, like a good novel, our lives keep out-writing us.”
Houston’s 4th Wall Theatre Company presents the regional premiere of “The Sound Inside,” Jan. 19-Feb. 11, 2023.
