African American diaspora
CHARLESTON: Nearly half of all African slaves brought to the U.S. came through Charleston, South Carolina’s Gadsden’s Wharf. This is where the International African American Museum is slated to open in early 2023.
The new museum aims to tell never-before-told stories of the African American journey. Exhibits will focus on the history of enslaved Africans, freed Black people and their descendants, in South Carolina’s Lowcountry.
The museum’s Center for Family History will also serve as a resource for African American genealogy. Staff will guide novice and advanced genealogists to learn more about family history using the Center’s sources, documents and texts.
