How about this for a new zoning classification?

The mayor of London, Sadiq Khan, has announced the launch of a £500,000 (US$630K) program to establish three “Night Time Enterprise Zones” in London.

This initiative is designed to boost the city’s nightlife sector.

Grants will be available to local authorities who wish to boost activity on streets with major pedestrian activity (“footfall”) after 6 p.m. It is hoped that extended opening hours, improved access to shops and services and improved safety for women and girls.

Khan’s plan follows a successful pilot elsewhere in the UK which saw post-6 p.m. footfall increase by 22 percent. The model also attracted a wider range of people using shops and services at night.

Night Time Enterprise Zones in London will “help local authorities and businesses make their high streets more welcoming and inclusive after 6 p.m.” the mayor added.

Amy Lamé, London’s Night Czar, said: “Our city is incredibly active at night, but too often our high streets shut down from 6 p.m., offering no reason for people to be there. We have an opportunity to work in partnership to boost local businesses, communities and the wellbeing of night workers across the capital.”

Three cheers to a replicable idea.
