The Next American Migration

The National League of Cities has published “The Next American Migration: What Cities Should Know About Climate Change and Populations on the Move.”

Why is this important to those who are minding their cities’ nighttime economies?

Win some, lose some.

Studies show that US residents are moving to areas less susceptible to storms, wildfires, droughts, flooding and extreme temperatures.

This will place additional burdens and expectations on some communities and less tax revenue for others. A city or town’s nighttime economy can no longer be ignored.

“This report provides city leaders with the information they need to better understand the complexities of climate migration and proactively prepare for the future,” proclaims nlc.org. “It offers federal, state and local leaders recommendations on how they can incorporate climate change impacts and resulting population shifts into their municipal budgets, programs and long-term plans.”
