ABOUT FENTANYL
Because it is cheap to make, illicitly manufactured fentanyl is commonly mixed with drugs like heroin, cocaine and methamphetamine. It can also be shaped into pills that resemble other prescription opioids.

Fentanyl-laced drugs are dangerous. Many may be unaware that the recreational drugs they take are laced with fentanyl.

According to the CDC, 107,375 people in the United States died of drug overdoses and drug poisonings in the 12-month period ending in January 2022. A staggering 67 percent of those deaths involved synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

Naloxone (like NARCAN® Nasal Spray) is a medicine that rapidly reverses an opioid overdose. Fentanyl test strips can also save lives.

RESOURCES

During our December, 2022 webinar, “Fentanyl and the Night: Save More Lives,” we stated that we would add harm reduction resources to our website. Here are four organizations that are providing meaningful leadership in the nighttime economy:

Always Strive and Prosper Foundation is a 501(c)(3) charitable non-profit that provides young people with realistic education about substance use and abuse. It was established in honor of Steven “A$AP Yams” Rodriguez.

The NYC Office of Nightlife at the Mayor’s Office of Media and Entertainment is bringing life-saving opioid overdose prevention tools and training to New York City’s nightlife and hospitality community.

Project Opioid and the Orlando Hospitality Alliance have launched D.R.I.P. (Downtown Overdose Reversal and Intervention Program), which will get an overdose reversal drugs into every bar, restaurant, and venue.

Volunteers for DanceSafe set up tables at music festivals, raves and other events to distribute information about harm reduction for safe and responsible drug use. The non-profit group’s new fentanyl test strips can quickly and reliably detect fentanyl and do not produce false positives
