Global Placemaking Summit

Global Placemaking Summit

The Global Placemaking Summit, scheduled for November 1-5, 2023, in Mexico City, marks the first global gathering of individuals and networks at the forefront of the placemaking movement. Its primary objective is to aid and encourage thirty-three regional placemaking networks with diverse goals and program development needs.

To provide some context, back in 2013, the organizers launched the global Placemaking Movement in partnership with organizations like UN-Habitat. This initiative started with conferences held in Detroit and Stockholm, with the aim of enabling the movement to become self-organized and decentralized by 2018. In 2018, they introduced PlacemakingX to draw attention to and support the establishment of regional networks that are now leading the global movement.

The current phase, which the Summit is launching, focuses on assisting and expanding these networks as they collaborate on cross-cutting issues related to public spaces, advocacy, and overall impact. Placemaking Leaders will collectively define these agendas.

However, one notable absence in this initiative is a focus on placemaking during nighttime. This oversight may be due to the lack of representation from our sector, which is a missed opportunity from 24HourNation’s point of view.
