Public Transportation and Women’s Safety

Cities Today has an article about how London is working to make public transportation safer for women and girls.

“As passenger figures inch back towards pre-pandemic levels, a growing number of cities are re-examining how they can make public transport safer and more inclusive,” the magazine relays.

“Reports of attacks and anti-social behavior directed at staff and passengers have been on the rise globally over the past two decades, with an August 2022 study by the Mineta Transportation Institute finding the trend is ‘a relatively recent phenomenon.'”

With that in mind, the article goes on to present insights on London’s safety strategies and campaigns to report sexual harassment. The piece references how reports of sexual harassment have risen. It is unclear, however, if actual instances of sexual harassment are on the rise.

This is a nuance to consider elsewhere.

In the article, 24HourNation did note controversy over the idea of gender-specific transportation, such as a women’s-only train car.

Tell us your thoughts about the idea of a women’s-only option in public transportation.
