The Sound
The aging Surfside Race Place needed to be reimagined.
The off-track betting facility near the Del Mar Race Track was getting a bit long in the tooth.
Owners considered several options to remake the venue, including a restaurant, movie theater and even a microbrewery.
Then, in 2016, College of Business Administration students from Cal State San Marcos had an idea and worked up a comprehensive study. They proposed taking the Del Mar Fairgrounds facility and transforming it into the region’s newest concert venue.
The result is The Sound, a $17-million venue with a footprint of 9,500 square feet and capacity for 1,900 spectators.
The Sound opened Feb. 3, 2023, in Del Mar, California, with a performance by eight-time Grammy winner, Ziggy Marley.
