Nightlife venues spur economic recovery

In the last six months, the 6 p.m. to 6 a.m. economy in Bristol UK has generated the equivalent of $55 million dollars into the Bristol economy.

And that’s based on data from the use of just one credit card platform and just one center-city postal code.

“Sixty-seven per cent of this is restaurants, bars, clubs, leisure and entertainment, so the core heart of the night-time economy,” says Bristol City Council’s night-time economy advisor Carly Heath,

“It is quite a significant amount of revenue coming into the city, and that is with omicron and the cost-of-living crisis.”

Bristol put a nighttime advocate in place in March 2021.

Based at Bristol’s city offices, Carly collaborates with the mayor’s office and chairs an independent advisory panel tackling the challenges facing the nighttime sector.

Her goals are to:

  • spearhead the recovery of the nighttime economy,
  • offer support to organizations working in the nighttime space, and
  • help rebuild the local economy.

Every city should have a nighttime economy advisor who answers directly to the mayor. Learn more about Bristol Nights.
